Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is a death row supervisor who has seen it all—until John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan in an Oscar-nominated performance) arrives. Coffey is a gentle giant, convicted of a horrific crime he likely didn’t commit. He also possesses a mysterious, supernatural gift: the ability to heal.

Paul Edgecomb soon discovers that Coffey possesses miraculous healing powers. Coffey cures Paul’s urinary tract infection and later heals the wife of the warden, who is dying of a brain tumor. As the story progresses, Paul realizes that Coffey is innocent and that his powers are a divine gift. The film explores the moral agony of the guards who must execute a man they believe is a miracle of God.
