Johnny Weissmuller is Tarzan for most of the 20th century. His films (particularly Tarzan the Ape Man and Tarzan and His Mate ) created the pop-culture clichés: the chest-swelling yell, the vine-swinging "me Tarzan, you Jane," and the pidgin English. Weissmuller’s Olympic swimming physique made the action believable. However, viewed today, these films are problematic: heavy on animal cruelty (stock footage of real chimp fights), colonial attitudes, and a Tarzan who is often a noble simpleton, not the brilliant linguist of the books.
