The official answer from director Peter Medak (interviewed in the obscure 2009 documentary Directors of the Damned ) is a cocktail of studio interference and MPAA pressure. MGM was hemorrhaging money in the late ‘90s and wanted Species 2 to be a lean, mean, VHS-ready machine. They believed the audience came for two things: Natasha Henstridge in sheer outfits and practical gore effects.
