The bride, draped in a heavy silk saree (often red, the color of passion and prosperity) or a Lehenga , is escorted by her maternal uncles to the Mandap (a four-pillared canopy). Here, she and the groom exchange floral garlands ( Jaimala ). This ritual levels the playing field: regardless of wealth or caste, they meet as equals, breathing each other’s life force (the scent of flowers) into one another.
Fire ( Agni ) is the primary witness to a Hindu marriage. The priest lights a fire in a copper vessel. All subsequent mantras are chanted facing the fire. The couple offers Ahuti (oblations) of rice, ghee, and herbs into the fire, asking for blessings of health, wealth, and children. The smoke carries their prayers to the heavens.
