In July 1917, Richthofen shot down British pilot Donald Cunnell. But as Cunnell’s plane crashed, Richthofen saw the pilot was still alive and trying to save his observer, Lt. Grieve. Richthofen landed his plane next to the wreck, pulled the men out, and called for medical help. He wrote to the British POW camp later: "Please inform me if Lt. Grieve survives.
